CLIMATE CHANGE - AN ANALYSIS

Climate change is a long-term shift in weather conditions identified by changes in temperature, precipitation, winds, and other indicators.
The earth's climate is regulated by the balance between incoming and outgoing solar energy, which determines the Earth's energy balance. Any factor that causes a sustained change to the amount of incoming energy or outgoing energy can lead to climate change.
Factors causing climate change
Factors that cause climate change can be divided into three categories, viz., external natural factors, man-made factors and natural internal factors.
External natural factors include changes in volcanic activity, solar output, and the Earth's orbit around the Sun. These factors primarily influence the amount of incoming energy and generally have a short-term effect. On the other hand, natural internal factors include variations in ocean currents or atmospheric circulations.
It is the man-made factors, that is, climate change caused by human activities, which is of greatest concern. This is because it influences both incoming and outgoing energy and could have far-reaching environmental, social, and economic consequences.
Why does it matter?
If climate change continues at the present rate, then earth in future (by 2100) will be no longer liveable. Already the signs in the form of changes in precipitations (Chennai floods in 2015); rise in sea levels; changes in seasonal periods as visible from no fix period for winters, summers or rainy seasons; warmer sea surface temperatures means stronger and frequent typhoons (in 2015 almost every other typhoon or hurricane was a category V storm); and last but not the least, the emergence of environmental refugees which will entail a huge political, economic, social and strategic cost for countries living on the fringe of coasts.
Efforts so far
The first instance of awareness towards this phenomenon was made in 1962 when the Club of Rome published “Limits to Growth” and later on Brundtland Commission in 1987 emphasised in sustainable development.
But the first concrete steps towards controlling climate change came in the form of Montreal Protocol (1987) that emphasised on controlling Ozone gas so as to lessen the size of Ozone hole. This treaty has been so far the most successful treaty in environmental space.
To tackle the climate change more effectively, in 1990s, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) came into being leading to organisation of Conference of Parties (COP) that saw the coming together of all the UN member nations. So far 21 COP have been held with the COP 21 being held in Paris, France.
Paris climate summit 2015
United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 21 or CMP 11 was held in Paris, France, from 30 November to 12 December 2015. It was the 21st yearly session of the Conference of the Parties to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 11th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
The conference negotiated the Paris Agreement, a global agreement on the reduction of climate change. The agreement facilitates enforcement of global green house emission reduction measures in the post-2020 (post Kyoto Protocol) scenario.
The agreement will become legally binding if joined by at least 55 countries which together represent at least 55 percent of global greenhouse emissions. Such parties will need to sign the agreement in New York between 22 April 2016 and 21 April 2017, and also adopt it within their own legal systems
Achievements of the summit
• The accord achieved one major goal. It limits average global warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial temperatures and strives for a limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) if possible.
• Every country will need to submit their plans every five years. Moreover, the reporting and monitoring system is to be more transparent and comprehensive. In particular, emerging and developing countries that now dominate emissions like China will be part of that system.

Sticking points in the accord
• COP21 does not mandate exactly how much each country must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Rather, it sets up a bottom-up system in which each country will set a "nationally determined contribution” and then explain how it plans to achieve it.
• Though, the agreement calls for the creation of a committee of experts to "facilitate implementation" and "promote compliance", but it won't have the power to punish violators.

• Another issue, was whether there would be compensation to be paid to countries that will see irreparable damage from climate change but have done almost nothing to cause it. Not much is achieved on this.
The Paris summit is a step in the right direction, although a small one. As it stands, it will at best slow the pace at which the world reaches a possible disaster. Growth of the world economy has been more than the fall in emissions per unit of output. If growth is not to be sacrificed this rate of decline must be increased.
What really matters is not the Paris agreement, but what follows. The national plans must be ambitious and swift. The world also needs a new pattern of investment and technological innovation, new sources of finance, backed by changed incentives. It is far too early to feel confident that the curve of emissions will now bend downwards.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the future. But is it the right kind of future where AI can end up controlling everything, from how toasty is your toast to how and when to land a plane? That is the question some of the most brilliant engineers and scientists are asking as they form a group to research AI.
Tech behemoths like Infosys and Amazon have joined hands with a few other companies to work on AI that could benefit the world. Elon Musk, Vishal Sikka and Peter Thiel are among people who have come together to invest $1 billion in a group called OpenAI.
The group claims to be a non-profit organization that will use digital intelligence to solve problems faced by people.
The company informs through a blog on its official website that it aims to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, "unconstrained by a need to generate financial return".
It will encourage the researchers to publish their work be it blogs, posts or code. It also would share its patents with the world, if any.
"It's hard to fathom how much human-level AI could benefit society, and it's equally hard to imagine how much it could damage society if built or used incorrectly" notes the company. Ilya Sutsveker, former research scientist at Google Brain Team is the research director at OpenAI while the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is Greg Brockman, former CTO of tech-company Stripe.
Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka, along with Alan Kay, is an adviser to the group. "Our wish is that together the OpenAI team will do unfettered research in the most important, most relevant dimensions of AI, no matter how long it takes to get there, not limited to just identifying dancing cats in videos, but to creating ideas and inventions that amplify our humanity, that help us learn more, see/perceive and understand more, and be more", writes Sikka in a blog post .
Elon Musk, the man behind Tesla who is considered one of the most brilliant futurists right now, too is part of the endeavour. Interestingly, Musk has also been critical of the AI efforts.
"I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it's probably that. So we need to be very careful," Musk once toldThe Guardian.

Smartphones may disappear in five years, says study,

Smartphones will become obsolete within five years and would be replaced with artificial intelligence, according to a consumer survey by the Ericsson owned ConsumerLab.
Half of the study's respondents said they thought mobile technology would be redundant by 2021 as the growth of artificial intelligence starts enabling interaction with objects without the need for a phone or tablet, Sydney Morning Herald reported.
"A smartphone in the hand, it's really not that practical. For example, not when one is driving a car or cooking. And there are many situations where display screens are not so good. Therefore, one in two think that smartphones will belong to the past within five years," Ericsson ConsumerLab's Rebecka Cedering Angstrom was quoted as saying.
The research lab surveyed 100,000 people across Sweden and 39 other countries.
With around 1.9 billion smartphone users globally, this means ConsumerLab covered just 0.0052 percent of active users for its study.

Now, Google's Fortune teller website is a new project launched with an aim to spread awareness about the refugee crisis.
The 'Google baba' has the answer to almost everything under the sky since it started.
Not a day goes by when we don't search for something on Google. Most common of all the things is definitely about predicting one's future.
People go at lengths typing out questions with the utmost curiosity of what lies ahead and Google, smartly enough has played on this very aspect for promoting a good cause.
As we all know, the Syrian civil war is one of the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. More than 11 million people have been killed in the conflict or have been forced to move out of their homeland.
The war has ravaged the country leaving thousands of people homeless, starving and there have been many horrifying cases of human rights violation.
MercyCorps which is an international development organisation which helps people in conflict-ridden areas, complied a comprehensive report on the Syrian crisis. The report states that nearly half of the country's pre-war population of about 23 million is in dire need of assistance, that includes those living in the country and refugees who have flown abroad.
This new website launched by Google is an attempt to create widespread awareness about the Syrian refugee crisis.
When one goes the Fortune teller site and clicks on the 'Predict my Future' button, the website will redirect you into a page which says, 'OF COURSE WE CAN'T PREDICT YOUR FUTURE! But 60 million refugees ask themselves every day if they have a future at all. So we used a fake Google-site to get your attention because apparently you were interested in your own future. Please take a moment to think of their future.'
One can make donations and do their bit to help millions of innocent Syrian civilians fighting this crisis.

Tianhe-2: World's powerful supercomputer for the 6th consecutive time.

China’s Tianhe-2 has maintained its rank as the world’s most powerful supercomputer for the sixth consecutive time. The biannual Top500 list of supercomputers revealed that China’s Tianhe-2 supercomputer has retained its position. Developed by China’s National University of Defense Technology and deployed at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, Tianhe-2, or Milky Way 2, has a performance of 33.86 petaflops per second (Pflop/s). It has held the title as the most powerful computer since June 2013.
According to the report, the Chinese supercomputer system can perform almost twice as fast as the Titan of the U.S. Department of Energy, the next on the list, which has a performance of 17.59 Pflop/s. According to the report, since June 2013 there has been no change in the ranking of the world’s top 5 supercomputers in the latest edition of the closely watched list.
The report also indicated significant changes from last year’s list. One change is the sharp decline in the number of systems in the United States, which is currently at 201. China has almost tripled its number of supercomputers, according to a reputable list of the world’s most powerful machines. The country has 109 high-performance computing systems on the biannual Top500 list of supercomputers, up 196% from 37 just six months ago.

Google is putting a different twist on the concept of "automated reply" with a new tool that aims to write artificially intelligent responses to your email.
The technology is part of an update to Google's Inbox app for managing and organizing email . The feature announced Tuesday is the latest example of Google's effort to teach machines how to take over some of the tasks typically handled by humans.
The most conspicuous example so far has been Google's 6-year-old project developing cars that can drive without a human steering the wheel. Google also has been using an artificial intelligence program called "RankBrain" to help determine the pecking order in its influential Internet search results.
In this instance, Google says it has created a program that identifies which incoming emails merit quick responses and then figures out the appropriate wording. Up to three choices will be offered as a reply before it's sent. The responses that people select are supposed to help Google's computers learn which ones work best.
Google expects its new "smart reply" option to be particularly popular when people are checking emails on smartphones equipped with smaller, touch-screen keyboards.
The new feature is available to all consumers who use the free version of Inbox, as well as the more than 2 million businesses who pay for Google's suite of applications designed for work.
Google unveiled Inbox a year ago as a more sophisticated alternative to its popular Gmail service. The Mountain View, California, company hasn't said how many people have installed Inbox. Gmail has more than 400 million worldwide users, according to the research firm comScore.
Google is part of a recently formed parent company, Alphabet Inc.

Researchers from Universities of Sheffield and Leeds have shown that certain types of sound waves can move data quickly, using minimal power which can be the answer to faster computing or access the data you need.
The sound used is in the form of surface acoustic waves - the same as the most destructive wave that can emanate from an earthquake.
Although already harnessed for use in electronics and other areas of engineering, this is the first time surface acoustic waves have been applied to a data storage system.
"The key advantage of surface acoustic waves in this application is their ability to travel up to several centimetres without decaying, which at the nano-scale is a huge distance," explained Tom Hayward from University of Sheffield.
"Because of this, we think a single sound wave could be used to 'sing' to large numbers of nanowires simultaneously, enabling us to move a lot of data using very little power," he added.
The world's data is mostly held on hard disk drives - magnetic disks that work like miniaturised record players, with the data read by sensors that scan over the disk's surface as it spins.
But because this involves moving parts, there are limits on how fast it can operate.
In the new study, Dr Hayward and professor John Cunningham from University of Leeds came up with a completely new solution: passing sound waves across the surface on which the wires are fixed.
They also found that the direction of data flow depends on the pitch of the sound generated - in effect they "sang" to the data to move it.
"We are now aiming to create prototype devices in which this concept can be fully tested," the duo noted.
The research was published in the journal Applied Physics Letters.

RankBrain an Artificial Intelligence is now working on Google’s Search Results of 15% per day.RankBrain, however, is not a replacement for Google’s algorithm Hummingbird, which is a system that processes what people search for and which page has to be ranked high. Rather it’s about just 1 part of the Hummingbird algorithm.
When someone searches for anything, person, topic or place RankBrain understands how to submit a request and interprets the various ways in which the best possible result could be submitted for the search.
For instance let’s say you searched for the best Digital Marketing Company in India, now RankBrain will give you results for the Best Digital Marketing Company in India, Best Digital Marketing Agency in India, and looking at your geography if you are located in Noida currently, it will show you results for Best Digital Marketing Company or Agency in Noida, India.
Bloomberg in an interview with Greg Corrado, a Senior Research Scientist at Google who is involved with RankBrain stated:
RankBrain seems to be a new way of processing queries like this that goes even further beyond what’s been used.
“RankBrain uses artificial intelligence to embed vast amounts of written language into mathematical entities — called vectors — that the computer can understand. If RankBrain sees a word or phrase it isn’t familiar with, the machine can make a guess as to what words or phrases might have a similar meaning and filter the result accordingly, making it more effective at handling never-before-seen search queries.”
3RD OF GOOGLE’S MOST IMPORTANT??
Bloomberg’s story also says that 15 percent of the queries are now being processed with RankBrain and that RankBrain is the third-most important signal in ranking:
“ RankBrain is one of the “hundreds” of signals that go into an algorithm that determines what results appear on a Google search page and where they are ranked, Corrado said. In the few months it has been deployed, RankBrain has become the third-most important signal contributing to the result of a search query, he said.”
RankBrain, however, is not really a ranking signal but rather a query processing tool.
The Bloomberg article then also states that:
“So far, RankBrain is living up to its AI hype. Google search engineers, who spend their days crafting the algorithms that underpin the search software, were asked to eyeball some pages and guess which they thought Google’s search engine technology would rank on top. While the humans guessed correctly 70 percent of the time, RankBrain had an 80 percent success rate.
